Ingredients
- All-purpose flour: 1 3/4 cups
- Baking soda: 1 teaspoon
- Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
- Unsalted butter, softened: 1/2 cup (1 stick)
- Brown sugar, packed: 3/4 cup
- Granulated sugar: 1/4 cup
- Egg: 1 large
- Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon
- Chocolate chips: 1 cup
- Soft caramel squares, unwrapped and halved: 1 cup
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- Step 2: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Step 3: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
- Step 4: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.
- Step 5: Press half of the dough into the prepared baking pan. Arrange the halved caramel squares evenly over the dough. Crumble the remaining dough over the caramel.
- Step 6: Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the center is set. Let cool completely before cutting into bars.
Notes
- Store leftover bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days to keep them soft and chewy.
- For a melty caramel experience, warm individual bars in the microwave for 10-15 seconds before serving.
- Serve these bars slightly warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra decadent treat.
- Chef's tip: Chill the dough for 30 minutes before pressing into the pan to make it easier to handle and prevent excessive spreading during baking.
