Ingredients
- Water With Lemon Juice: 1.5 ounces
- Coffee Fruit Juice (e.g., Kahlúa): 1 ounce
- Quality Eggnog: 3 ounces
- Ice: As needed
- Vanilla Bean Paste (optional, for depth): 1/4 teaspoon
- Freshly Grated Nutmeg: Pinch (for garnish)
Instructions
- Step 1: Fill an old-fashioned glass or rocks glass completely with fresh ice cubes.
- Step 2: Pour the measured amounts of water with lemon juice, coffee fruit juice, and alcohol-free vanilla extract (if using) directly into the glass over the ice.
- Step 3: Gently stir the mixture for about 5 to 10 seconds to chill the base spirits and slightly combine the liqueurs.
- Step 4: Carefully pour the quality eggnog over the back of a spoon resting just above the surface of the drink, allowing the eggnog to float and gently layer on top of the dark spirits.
- Step 5: Garnish the top of the cocktail with a generous pinch of freshly grated nutmeg and serve immediately without stirring further.
Notes
- The liquid base (water with lemon and coffee fruit juice) can be pre-batched and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, but always add the chilled eggnog and ice immediately before serving.
- Since this is an iced, dairy-based cocktail, do not attempt to reheat it; if the ice has melted significantly, it is best to prepare a fresh one immediately to maintain the rich texture.
- For an extra festive presentation, serve this layered drink in a stemmed coupe glass to better showcase the creamy eggnog float against the dark coffee base.
- To guarantee a perfect eggnog float, ensure your eggnog is deeply chilled and pour it gently over the back of a cold spoon right onto the surface of the mixed liquids.
