Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 2 cups cooked white rice (for serving)
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (low sodium)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon red pepper chili flakes (or more, to taste)
- 2 stalks green onions, thinly sliced (for garnish)
Instructions
- Step 1: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until fully browned (about 5-7 minutes). Drain off any excess grease from the pan.
- Step 2: Reduce the heat to medium. Add the minced garlic to the beef and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the soy sauce and chili flakes, ensuring the beef is well coated.
- Step 3: Pour the honey over the ground beef mixture. Stir continuously for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and the beef mixture is glossy and caramelized. Keep warm while assembling the bowls.
- Step 4: Divide the cooked white rice evenly among 2-3 serving bowls, forming the base of the dish.
- Step 5: Spoon the hot honey ground beef generously over the top of the rice in each bowl. Garnish immediately with the sliced green onions before serving.
Notes
- Store leftover ground beef mixture separately from the rice in an airtight container for up to 3 days; the sauce will naturally thicken in the refrigerator.
- When reheating the beef mixture, add a splash of water or extra soy sauce to the pan to loosen the hot honey glaze and prevent it from scorching.
- For a fresh crunch to balance the rich sauce, serve these bowls with a side of steamed broccoli or quick pickled cucumbers.
- To achieve maximum caramelization and glossiness, ensure you stir the mixture constantly after adding the honey and monitor the heat carefully so the sugar doesn't burn.
