Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ball prepared pizza dough (12–14 oz)
- 4 oz hot Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1/2 cup low-moisture mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1/3 cup feta cheese, crumbled
- 2 tablespoons quality honey, for drizzling
- 1 tablespoon olive oil, plus extra for the pan
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat the oven and prepare the sausage. Place a pizza stone or baking steel in the oven and preheat to 500°F (260°C). While the oven heats, cook the hot Italian sausage in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it up into small pieces until fully browned (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess grease and set aside.
- Step 2: Stretch the dough and prepare the base. Carefully stretch or roll the pizza dough to a 12-14 inch circle. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured pizza peel or a lightly oiled baking sheet/pan. Brush the edges of the dough lightly with olive oil.
- Step 3: Assemble the toppings. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella evenly over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust. Distribute the cooked hot sausage and the crumbled feta cheese evenly over the mozzarella. If desired, sprinkle with red pepper flakes for extra heat.
- Step 4: Bake the pizza. Slide the pizza onto the preheated pizza stone or steel, or place the baking sheet directly into the hot oven. Bake for 8 to 12 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbling.
- Step 5: Finish and serve. Remove the pizza from the oven and transfer it to a cutting board. Immediately drizzle the entire pizza generously with the 2 tablespoons of honey. Slice and serve hot.
Notes
- Store any cooled leftovers tightly wrapped in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, making sure to keep slices flat for easier reheating.
- For optimal crispness, reheat individual slices in a dry skillet over medium heat until the crust is crisp and the cheese is remelted.
- Pair this rich, sweet-and-spicy pizza with a simple side salad dressed lightly with lemon and olive oil to balance the bold flavors.
- Achieve the best flavor balance by draining all excess grease from the cooked sausage before topping the pizza, ensuring the crust stays crisp during the high-temperature bake.
