Ingredients
Scale
- 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into strips
- 8 small pita breads or flour tortillas
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 tbsp dried oregano
- Juice of 1 large lemon
- 1 large tomato, diced
- 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
- 1/2 cup prepared Tzatziki sauce
Instructions
- Step 1: Slice the chicken breast into thin, bite-sized strips. In a mixing bowl, toss the chicken strips with the olive oil, lemon juice, and dried oregano. Allow the chicken to marinate for at least 15 minutes.
- Step 2: Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken strips and cook until fully opaque and lightly browned, about 5-7 minutes. Ensure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Step 3: While the chicken is cooking, prepare the assembly components. Warm the pita breads or tortillas briefly in the microwave for 15 seconds or on a dry skillet until pliable. Dice the large tomato.
- Step 4: Begin assembly by placing the warmed pita bread flat on a surface. Spread a generous tablespoon of prepared Tzatziki sauce evenly across the bread.
- Step 5: Layer the cooked Mediterranean chicken strips over the sauce. Top the chicken with the fresh diced tomato and a generous sprinkle of crumbled feta cheese. Fold or roll the pita to serve immediately.
Notes
- To maximize freshness, store leftover cooked chicken and fresh toppings (tomato, feta) separately in airtight containers for up to 3 days, only combining them right before serving.
- Reheat any leftover chicken strips in a covered skillet over medium-low heat with a tablespoon of water or broth to maintain moisture and prevent drying before reassembly.
- Elevate your meal by serving these tacos with a side of crunchy, chilled cucumber salad dressed simply with lemon and olive oil, or offer a creamy hummus dip for the unused pita ends.
- For a punchier Mediterranean aroma, gently rub the dried oregano between your palms before adding it to the marinade; this technique releases the essential oils and deepens the herbal flavor.
