Ingredients
- All-purpose flour: 2 1/4 cups
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: 1/2 cup
- Baking soda: 1 teaspoon
- Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
- Unsalted butter, softened: 1/2 cup (1 stick)
- Granulated sugar: 1 cup
- Brown sugar, packed: 1/2 cup
- Egg: 1 large
- Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Step 2: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Step 3: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
- Step 4: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Step 5: Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheets, leaving some space between each cookie.
- Step 6: Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers are still slightly soft. Let cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- Store cooled cookies in an airtight container with a slice of bread to keep them soft for longer.
- For a warm, gooey treat, microwave a cookie for about 5-10 seconds until slightly softened.
- Serve these cookies with a cold glass of milk or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a classic pairing.
- Chef's tip: Avoid overmixing the dough to ensure a soft and chewy texture; stop mixing when the dry ingredients are just combined.
