Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups Rice Chex Cereal
- 1 cup strawberry-flavored candy melts (or pink melting wafers)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ½ teaspoon vanilla powder
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar)
- 2 tablespoons freeze-dried strawberry powder
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Step 1: Combine the strawberry candy melts, butter, and vanilla powder in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second increments, stirring after each, until the mixture is completely smooth and melted.
- Step 2: Place the 4 cups of Chex cereal into a large mixing bowl. Pour the melted strawberry coating over the cereal and use a rubber spatula to gently fold until the cereal is evenly coated.
- Step 3: In a gallon-sized resealable plastic bag, combine the powdered sugar, freeze-dried strawberry powder, and salt. Shake the bag vigorously to ensure the powders are fully mixed and have a uniform pink color.
- Step 4: Carefully transfer the coated cereal into the plastic bag with the sugar mixture. Seal the bag, ensuring there is air inside to allow for shaking, and gently toss and shake until every piece of cereal is completely coated in the strawberry powder mixture.
- Step 5: Spread the Strawberry Puppy Chow onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper in a single layer. Allow it to cool and set completely (about 15 minutes) before serving or storing in an airtight container.
Notes
- Store this treat in an airtight container at cool room temperature for up to one week; refrigeration is not recommended as it can introduce moisture and soften the cereal.
- If the puppy chow begins to soften after a few days, spread it on a parchment-lined tray and bake at 250°F (120°C) for 5-8 minutes, then let it cool completely to restore its signature crunch.
- For a fun party mix, try serving this puppy chow chilled alongside small cups of vanilla ice cream or mix it with plain white mini marshmallows for added texture.
- To achieve the best flavor and color payoff, ensure the freeze-dried strawberry powder, powdered sugar, and salt are thoroughly mixed before adding the coated cereal to prevent clumping of the delicate fruit powder.
